You know what I'm about to tell you will change the way you hire DJs forever. I've been in the business for over 2 decades. I was trained by the best in the DJ industry. My first experience was in New York where I was the apprentice of one of the hottest Club & Event Disc Jockeys in New York. He also had a radio show as well he told me always give the people what they want and always always leave them wanting more. So over the years I've alway stayed true to that principle. In my career as a Professional DJ I've worked Night Clubs, Military Clubs, Mobile Productions, Stage Productions, Studio Producing, Sound Engineer,Sound Tech, Lighting Consultant and Set Designer.
First rule of thumb stay away from DJs or DJ companies that say UP AND COMING or FASTEST GROWING or terms that are similar. This screams Rookie or inexperienced they are simply saying they are good with no real history of being good. The phrase you wanna look for is TRIED AND TRUE, meaning at least 10 to 12 years or better. You see you want someone who has learned through experience what to do and not to do for your precious memories. Not someone who is technically using your event for On The Job Training. Anyone can buy equipment but you want someone who can trouble shoot any situation with their gear quickly and efficiently. Because you don't want excuses you want success and nothing less.
Second rule of thumb is don't except Idol Promises just to get your business. You see kinda like guys at the night clubs trying to get a date from a girl they will promise everything. Make sure you get it in writing as well as the amount for that promised service. Make sure your DJ has a legal service contract, and most importantly make sure he doesn't have an OUT CLAUSE in their contract. This screams I'm gonna dump you if a BIGGER BETTER EVENT comes along. Make sure your DJ understands you want customer service before and after signing the service contract.
Third make certain that the gear is of high professional standards ask for photos or video of the equipment promised.
Ask if they own their gear or are they renting or borrowing event equipment. This will be reflected in the price in most cases. Do not that it for granted that they have everything you need the hobbyist usually will rent some items because they only stock what they need for an average event. You don't wanna be subject to their supplier for your event I don't think thats fair and I'm sure you feel the same way. Consumer equipment although good in the home will not have the same range of performance in the Special Event Industry (Weddings,Conventions,Large Parties etc.) where you have large spaces to cover. Their gear should be up to date as well, this is very important because consistency and flexibility are needed especially for longer events.
Fourth is the price right and fair, to you and to the DJ industry. Well let me give you the inside secret here for how we price an event or service. We take the number of weeks in a year and the number of holidays in a year and add them together. Now we multiply this number by 2 the average is 70 - 80 primary booking days in a year. So per system we multiply the lowest price we would charge for that particular service. (for example 80 x 500 = 40,000 x 2 = 80,000) This means if we book this service every week for a year at $500.00 + holiday it will yield $80,000 a year. Now of could there are higher and lower service cost but this is our way of determining a fair rate. You see it's more important to work weekly for less than to work monthly for more. Our prices are the best in Hawaii by design and our customer service is always great no matter what the client is spending. There are a lot of DJs who brag how much they charge some boosting $2500-$4500 . We are proud to say $500.00 - $2000.00 is our range for DJ services and we work every weekend. Sam Walton would be proud of our more for less marketing. So don't get ripped off fair is fair.
Fifth do they have that WOW FACTOR! Wow factor is visual and audio punch combined with talent and the ability to read any crowd. Showmanship is nice but never up stage your client. 1st Class has always strives on every event you bring the WOW FACTOR in most cases giving our clients more than they paid for.
So remember 5 factors all make up finding the BEST DJ or DJ Company
